Stream Of Thoughts

I was recently re-reading one of my favorite books, The Sound and the Fury, by William Faulkner. Though reading is not quite the word. When I first tried to read this book, when I was 14, I was entranced by the language and emotion, yet really didn’t understand what was going on.

This was my first book that introduced me to a stream-of consciousness style of writing, where the writer tries to convey the running thoughts of a character. Kind of like: going to buy a house feel very excited very nervous feels like a lot of things like jumping off a bungee……

Buying a home does feel like your thoughts and feelings are all running together and at the same time. And starting the mortgage process, listening to a lot of people (friends, family, industry professionals), can feel like being whirled around in the ocean, let alone a stream.

Slowing down and understanding things piece by piece is a first step. It’s not essential to know everything right now. The main culprit, I find, is that people want to know too much too soon. Being meticulous and thoughtful regarding research before the loan process as well as during the pre-approval process should provide you with a much calmer mind. It is better to learn step-by-step than trying to pour 14 websites, 7 books, and 9 magazines worth of information in your head. All in one day.

And whatever you do, don’t read The Sound and the Fury until you have moved in. You’ll get so deep in the book that you will forget that you are supposed to buy a house.
